Site's importance

The water surfaces are inhabited by a rich invertebrate fauna, but also mammals, birds, reptilians and amphibians are largely present: the alpine newt, the common toad, the common frog and the grass snake, the mallard.
The wetland hosts vegetational associations typical of the "high" peat bog which are rare on the southern slope of the Alps. Among them we mention some of the peat bog's most typical plants: Lepidotis inundata, Betula pubescens, Drosera rotundifolia, Drosera anglica, Viola palustris, several species of the genus Carex, 24 different units of bryophytes of the genus Sphagnum.

The represented habitats are:

  • Active raised peat bogs with a priority habitat,
  • Bog woodlands with a priority habitat,
  • Depressions on peat substrates with a habitat which is not considered as a priority one,
  • Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clayey-silt-laden soils with a habitat which is not considered as a priority one,
  • Transition mires and quaking bogs with a habitat which is not considered as a priority one,
  • Acidophilous forests (Vaccinio-Picetea).

The Vedes small lake will undergo a series of environmental enhancement and improvement works within the management plan of the Reserves Network, which are financed through the PSR. Such works will concern the creation of an observation point, the movement of the path crossing environmentally sensitive areas to another position, punctual forestry works.
