Discovering the Acquedotto Leopoldino

The ANPIL "Sorgenti di Colognole" extends over the southwestern side of the territory belonging to the Municipality of Collesalvetti, very near the built-up area of Colognole. The holm oak forest of the Colognole's springs is the worthy frame of the wonderful aqueduct's structures in Colognole, which was completed by Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany, in the second half of the 19th century. The pipes project was at first planned as a "promenade of the aqueducts", namely an accessible way extraordinarily integrated within the environmental context, with water collection, filtering and purification facilities along its length (such as cisterns, water treatment facilities and small houses) that were devised as urban furniture.
