Area Naturale Protetta di Interesse Locale Le Balze

Routes and Tours

If you want to visit the charming places in the territory of the Municipality of Regello, here you are some recommended itineraries.

If you travel by car along the road leading from Donnini to Regello, passing through S.Donato in Fronzano and Pietrapiana, or also through Cancelli, you can find some strategic points to admire the wonderful landscape from above.
You can reach further panoramic points by taking the regional road 69 and, once you get in loc. Ruota la Mandò, turning to Rota; you can also take the SC road linking Ciliegi to Matassino and detouring towards Montanino or Rona.
If you want to get completely surrounded by nature and admire the formations of Le Balze from close up, you can go along some not very known itineraries of great landscape, historical, and geological interest on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback.
The Valley of Marnia is rather interesting: immediately after the country hamlet of S. Clemente, take a dirt road running along the stream and then climb along an ancient road leading you back to Pieve in Pitiana.
Further similar itineraries can be found along the road of Tornia, offering an extraordinary and very interesting panorama, since it crosses a wildlife area of particular value.
Another beautiful itinerary leads from Prulli to Rio Luco: it runs along the small watercourse on the one side and offers beautiful views over Le Balze on the other side.
However, the most attractive itinerary leaves from location Ostina and gets to the most beautiful area of Le Balze, giving the hiker the opportunity to observe them from close up. After leaving in direction of Vaggio, walk along the ditch of Borrilati; after crossing a small pass you will get to the valley of Rio di Luco; across another charming passage in Le Balze you will get to loc. Gretaio (Buca di Gabriello deserves a visit: here you can also stop for a while); the itinerary can continue uphill to Case Merenzi; cross then Piani di Cascia where you can enjoy Le Balze from above; pass through the Church of S.Siro and at the four-road crossroads take again the road to Ostina.

The several trails are different for length and slope, but they all share the wonderful panorama over Le Balze, a protected area and heritage of Valdarno and Tuscany.
