Wood regained

After almost thirty years of battles the unauthorized building work has been defeated and the whole area has been given the public back. Today the three hundred hectares taken away from the unauthorized building work by the Municipality of Piombino represent an environmental system of great value, where dunes, wetlands, agricultural glades, woody areas and a rare portion of wet coastal wood extend. The particular botanical feature is represented by the monumental dimensions of some plants: ashes, turkey oaks and oaks sometimes are some meters round. But most important is the landscape value of the whole area, which represent an example of the tree-lined pastures typical of the upper Maremma of the early twentieth century. The park extends over 296 hectares, out of which 17 hectares of sandy shores extending over 10 km, 124 hectares of dunal and retrodunal areas, 155 hectares of wood and agricultural glades.
