Germoplasm Bank

Laboratory for the conservation of the Ligurian plant diversity

Specialties: Flora
Loc. La Mortola
18039 Ventimiglia (IM)
Municipality: Ventimiglia

The laboratory for the conservation of the Ligurian plant diversity was established in 2006 thanks to the financing provided by the Region Liguria with European funds (Docup project - Goal 2 - Natura 2000 network). It represents an intersection point of the Rete Italiana Banche del Germoplasma - RIBES (Italian Network of the Germoplasm Banks). The Bank is a laboratory of the Hanbury Botanical Gardens - University of Genoa, and the facilities are located at La Mortola – Ventimiglia (IM), in a small historical building called "Casa Ballini", which also houses the Garden's seeds laboratory.

The bank is equipped with a dehydration room (19,6 m², 59 m³), where the relative humidity is maintained at 15% RH through a dehumidification system which absorbs humidity through a drying rotor, and temperature is maintained at 15°C. A portable gauge to measure the water activity (Rotronic Hygropalm) makes it possible to verify the actual dehydration level of the seeds. The samples are kept in vials with pressure closing (rubber gasket and aluminum case), within glass jars placed in the freezer at a temperature of -20° C.
