The Itinerary

The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri (Ligurian Alta Via, or AV) is an excursion itinerary linking the extremes of the two Ligurian coasts, passing through the Tyrrhenian-Po Plain watershed of the Alpi Marittime and of the Ligurian Apennine chain. Thanks to the characteristics of the trail, the itinerary is ideal for those who are not interested in mass tourism, but in exploring the Ligurian hinterland and mountains. The AV gives the possibility to admire along the way naturalistic and historical-architectonic aspects of great interest: endemic flora and fauna, peculiar geological formations and spectacular geomorphological phenomena, typical alpine mountains and precious great forests, medieval villages, ancient salt roads, and many works linked to the countryside culture and tradition. For its geographical position, the AV has been included within a national excursion project called "Sentiero Italia" (the Italian Trail, or Si). Even if it is not completely operative, above all as far as complementary services are concerned, this itinerary guarantees the connection among Valle d'Aosta, Piemonte, Liguria, Toscana, and Umbria through the other routes of Valle d'Aosta, the Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA) of Piemonte and the Grande Escursione Appenninica (GEA), up to Castelluccio di Norcia (PG) and includes the AV like the main axis. The AV is also part of the important European long distance paths E1 and E7 (photo 60: among the "giants of stone" of Galero Maurizio Robello).
