The most important mountain system in Europe covers a surface of 250.000 sq. km. Over the last sixty years, forty national and regional parks have been established with the aim to preserve 12.500 sq. km, the 5% of the whole territory.
It is the result of the work of a team made of Italy, France, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.
Preventing the wild exploitation of a precious ecosystem and preserving its biological variety are the main aims of the safeguard of this spectacular folding which saw the light 100 million years ago and which saw man's efforts to climb higher and higher peaks and to descend to the bottom of the valleys with alternating feelings of attraction and fear.
