Pom matan of San Sebastiano Da Po

Definition
Pom matan is an autochthonous apple variety of Colline Torinesi. Probably originating from a spontaneous hybridization process, this apple variety has been subsequently selected and reproduced by man. Specimens of pom matan trees can be found not only in Colline Torinesi, but also in Val Chisone and Lanzo valleys. However, only in the plain between San Sebastiano Da Po and Monteu Da Po there are nurseries able to reproduce this variety.
Pom matan tree is luxuriant, with a thick and large foliage, which is left naturally growing. Pom matan is not very sensitive to scab, the main adversity of the apple tree.
The production of apples begins about 5 years after the planting of the trees, and is very abundant.
This tree produces medium-big spherical fruits, with short but strong peduncle. The peel has a yellow-pale green background color, with red streaks, especially in the parts exposed to the sun. The pulp is cream-white and dry, with a thin texture, and a sour taste. It can also be used to prepare salty dishes. The fruits, harvested between September and October, are completely ripe in late autumn and can be preserved until late spring.

  • Production Area: The production area includes the Municipality of San Sebastiano Da Po and the adjacent towns. In San Sebastiano Da Po, every year during the second week of September, the traditional Pom Matan Festival is held.

  • Legislative Protection: At the moment, pom matan has no legislative protection.
