Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese

Grignolino, Barbera, and Freisa are the main vines of Monferrato Casalese: four wines are obtained from them, all with controlled designation of origin.
Called Barbesino in the past, probably Grignolino has been named after the dialect term "grignòle", that is grape seeds, particularly abundant in its grapes. It is a "difficult" vine, ripening well only if it is cultivated in particular places and if the production is low. The bunches, with oval and red-violet grapes, are harvested at the beginning of October.
Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC is obtained from its vines: the color is a light and bright ruby, becoming orange if aging, the taste is dry and tannic, and the alcoholic content of at least 11°. Combining Grignolino with Barbera and Freisa grapes, you can obtain wines with a more intense color and harmony, suitable for an aging of over two years, which represents the maximum limit for pure Grignolino.
