A loop by bike between the Po and San Genuario marsh

  • Trail Conditions: By bike
  • Interest: Flora, Wildlife, Panorama

San Genuario, "nature island in the checkered sea". The sea is made of rice fields, which between April and June (the flooding period) offer a very evocative environment. A unique landscape: light plays, reflections galore, and Mt. Rosa, which can be seen at the horizon in fine weather, or reflected in the regular mirrors of the rice fields. But it's not just landscape: after centuries of activity the rice fields have become an ecosystem, a habitat for many species, especially for birds. Pedalling by the flight of herons and little egrets is a very pleasant experience. The itinerary winds among the rice fields between Crescentino and Trino. An easy and not too long loop.
The point of departure is Crescentino, and the itinerary leads to the marsh of San Genuario and to Isola Santa Maria, on the Po banks. Progetto VENTO, the bike trail connecting Venice and Turin along the Po River, also runs through this area.
Apart from short stretches in town, the itinerary is not on bike lanes, but on dirt roads used to access the fields, and province roads where traffic is light, especially in the weekend. Exception: the short stretches on Province Roads SP 107 and SP 2 leading in and out of Crescentino.
