Parco dell'Alpe Veglia e dell'Alpe Devero

Piana di Veglia

Piana di Veglia, where the centuries-old presence of man and the traditions of the rural culture harmoniously coexist, is the ideal place to discover the geological, morphological, botanical, and wildlife features of the Alpe.
The tour of the basin, a short and easy itinerary, can be considered a complete summary of the different aspects and specific features of the Park. As a matter of fact, the homonymous "Sentiero Natura" (Nature Trail) leads us through different laps: the glacial evolution of the basin, the "Marmitte dei Giganti" (giant kettles or potholes), the ancient hunters of Alpe Veglia, the red ant, the mineral spring of Rio Mottiscia, the larch, the pasture, the lime-kiln, the lichens, and the great Alpine folding. The main nuclei and the most picturesque patches of the plain are Cianciavero, Aione, Ponte, Cornù, La Balma, "Lago delle Streghe", and Frua waterfall.
Along the trail following the right bank of Rio Frua, after crossing the watercourse on a small bridge, you reach the beautiful plateau called "Pian dul Scric" (1,993m above sea-level): it is one of the main summer pastures for cows, but it is also a plateau of rare beauty scattered with huge erratic blocks. Valtendra Pass, almost a rocky passage, is the last place where Mt. Leone dominates, since it will soon give way to the mountains of Devero. From here you can go down for a short stretch to Bondolero valley, characterized by two beautiful rocky plates; you can also reach in a short time an oblong lake - where it is possible to see the Alpine newts - from which you can go ahead towards Scatta d'Orogna.
