Onion was considered an "exploiting" cultivation, to the extent that some tenancy contracts listed it among the forbidden cultivations. This depended on the fact that onion needs nitrogenous fertilizers: for this reason, it is useful to cultivate a leguminous plant before it. Probably of Asian origins, it was already known by the Chaldeans.
