Matera DOC Wines

Matera wine has finally obtained the recognition it had been expecting for a long time: as a matter of fact, the wines produced in Matera and in its surroundings have recently obtained (July 2005) the Controlled Designation of Origin (Denominazione di Origine Controllata - DOC) and represent Matera all over the world. The youngest DOC wine of Lucania, the "Matera DOC" has been named after the town of the Sassi. There are six typologies of Matera DOC wines, three red and three white wines, including one spumante: "Matera Rosso", "Matera Primitivo", "Matera Moro", "Matera Greco", "Matera Bianco", "Matera Spumante". The latter follows a natural fermentation in bottle, a unique method in Southern Italy. The vineyards are situated at no more than 700m asl and cover about 1,500 ha in the Province of Matera.
