Valliera Sweet Potato

The sweet potato (Batatata) is a root vegetable with a whitish pulp becoming soft and sweet when it is cooked. It can be prepared in various ways, in autumn-winter. However, its taste is much sweeter: as a matter of fact, this tuber is used to prepare several desserts (like the so-called maneghi, that is sweet potato gnocchi flavored with melted butter, sugar, and cinnamon), as well as many sweet-and-sour specialties. For some years now, on the second Sunday of October, in the small country hamlet of Valliera di Adria, a characteristic festival is held to celebrate this poor food characterizing the local country tradition.
