Celebrations, Fairs, and Markets along the River Sile

The Mid-Lent bonfire

5th and 6th January - evening
"Pan e Vin"

(In the whole province)
In the Trevigiano, the Epiphany is also a synonym of fires, the so-called "Pan e Vin". Christianity took possession of this tradition, but the fires have their origins in the veneration of the sun and the fire by the agrarian pre-Christian civilizations.
The mythical celebration has survived until today because it represents a wonderful moment of popular aggregation: joining around the same fire confirms the necessity of a brotherhood among men and of a new harmony with nature, without forgetting spells and predictions for the new agrarian year.
On the occasion, a sweet called "la Pinza" is made, which is based on corn polenta and raisins, with numberless variations.

Mid-Lent
"Il falò sul fiume a metà Quaresima"

(on the river Sile in Treviso, Ponte Dante)
The "Pan e Vin" is linked to the Mid-Lent bonfire, when a puppet representing an old witch - the symbol of winter, evil, and misery - is burnt. Before the fire there is a "process", during which the old woman becomes the scapegoat of all the bad things involving the community: taxes, bad administration, natural disasters, etc.
If the "Pan e Vin" closes the Christmas period and marks the beginning of the Carneval, the bonfire marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring.
In Treviso, the celebration begins with popular dances after which there is the process to the old woman - the town - in which all the evils of the previous year are exorcized.
The conviction to the purifying fire is necessary to wash evil away and to forget it with the help of the river which carries away also the ashes.
The executioners let themselves down at the bridge San Martino and descend the river with the lighted torches up to the bend of the bridge Dante, where the old woman is suspended over the water, waiting to be burnt. After that, dances, wine, and sweets.

Exhibition of the asparagus

1st May
"Mostra dell'asparago"

(Badoere)
In the wonderful frame of the 16th century square, the traditional exhibition of the asparagus takes place. It is an inter-provincial event organized by the Town of Morgano, of which Badoere is a country ward. Band, dances, fair, and final tasting of asparagus with hard-boiled eggs, according to the tradition.

Torchlight procession by boat on the Sile.

Sagra del peperone

Antique trade market

September
"Sagra del peperone"

(Zero Branco)
Endless rows of very coloured stands alternating with enormous barbecues characterize the festival of the pepper and of the season vegetables which takes place every year in Zero Branco, in September.

October
"Fiera di San Luca"

(Treviso, area of Porto di Fiera)
The most ancient and famous fair in Treviso was the one of San Michele di Melma, whose name derives from the locality where it was born (now Silea), which took place in the day of San Michele (29th September). In 1226 it was moved to 18th October, St. Luke's day.
It has always taken place "Ad Portum Silis", outside the old entrance called Tolpada, today Porto di Fiera.
It was a real trade fair of northern-eastern Italy, and traders came from Treviso in the Tre Venezie, in Lombardia, and Emilia (the announcement for the 1205 fair is still preserved).
Now the Fair is a fun-fair, with stands for wine and typical food tasting.

Half/end of December (before Christmas)
"Mostra del radicchio rosso"

(Treviso, Loggia dei Trecento)
In autumn and winter, the prince of the tables of the Marca is the famous and delicious red chicory. It is possible to find it on the markets from the half of November to the end of February. There are three kinds of it, the early one, the medium-slow ripening one, and the slow-ripening one, and from these about 3000 different qualities derive.
The displays of the chicory take place not only in Treviso, but also in Castelfranco, Santa Cristina, and Preganziol.
