Itinerary of the Scoglio del Salveregina

  • Trail Conditions: On foot
  • Interest: Flora, Geology, Religion
  • Duration: 4 hour/s
  • Difficulty Level: E - Hiking (level)
  • Length: 9.8 km

The itinerary leaves from Pasquarella Hermitage, in front of which you will find a large car park. The important religious building dating back to the 11th century welcomes an image representing Re Magi, that has become an object of worship. If you love sports climbing, in the nearby Gole del Forello you will find several vie attrezzate: the particular features of the rock have created here an ideal place meeting the needs of the most expert climbers. From the site below the Hermitage, cross the torrent and take a trail on the left running along the banks towards Acqualoreto. The cliff dominating this stretch of trail is called "Scoglio del Salveregina" since, according to an ancient legend, the Madonna, who came to the West after the death of her Son, jumped with her horse from the summit of the cliff to the other edge of the gorge. The local people swear that on a stone it is still possible to see the signs left by the hooves of the horse during the sharp landing. You will get near Poggio della Sanità, from where, following a forest-cattle road, you will pass near Torre Giannini, that cannot be visited because it is private property. Follow the dirt road leading to Morruzze, without reaching the town. Beyond two barns, turn left, slightly downhill. Always on the right, the trail Buche del Vento begins. This stretch of the itinerary follows the ancient road connecting Morruzze with Civitella, the outer estates of the Municipality of Todi: in some points it is still possible to recognize the original paved road. The itinerary follows the slopes of Mt. Cerrentino, becoming then a road created for the maintenance of the aqueduct running along it. After three big hairpin bends crossing as many ditches, take a not very well evident trail on the right. Nearby, along Fosso dell'Acquaviva there is a small ravine ideal to practice canyoning and offering some very open stretches where you can enjoy beautiful views of Pasquarella Hermitage and the high waterfalls set in the rocky walls. Going ahead towards Fosso della Pasquarella, always following the trail, you will shortly reach the Hermitage.
