Fola Bridge

Romanesque origins, probably built in the late Middle Ages, the Fola Bridge is located on the border between Groppo, hamlet of Riolunato, and Pievepelago, climbing over the exit of the Pievepelago River before it abyssed into the ravine which for centuries has been an obstacle to communications, since the passage was only possible at the Straitra Bridge. Huge were the difficulties in crossing the waterways, in particular because they lacked barriers, so much so that the fords were guarded by sacred newsagents and crosses. The Modena Apennine sector has always played a crucial role in the trade between the Po Valley area and Tuscany, especially towards the Lucca area and the Pistoia plain.
