In the woodland, everything is used: old dens or abandoned nests easily become an ideal shelter for other animals, and dead or dying trees are the only habitat for fungi and insects which represent more than two thirds of the species living in the wood.
Several organisms, both vegetable and animal, have the task to accelerate the decomposition of the various organic substances transforming them into humus, the nourishment for the undergrowth and high-trunk plants.
