Rodigo
Ancient Roman outpost on the edge of the Via Postumia
Rodigo's origins date back to the 11th-12th century, but the discovery of the Necropolis of Collefiorito and of findings from the age of the Gauls confirm that it was already inhabited in the protohistory. Many roman settlements were also found.
In 1432 Rodigo became domain of the Gonzaga family, and from 1479 to 1587 it was an independent county.
In 1708 the territory was conquered by the Austrians, it became a french territory from 1796 until 1814 when it became an Austrian property again.
In 1859 it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
Rodigo features many remarkable palaces and villas, while the village of Fossato is famous thanks to the presence of Ippolito Nievo's birthplace, where he wrote the last part of "Confessioni di un italiano".
Rivalta is the heart of Mincio Valleys Nature Reserve. It is worth visiting the area of Fondo Mincio, the center of Mantua's green tourism: the Ethnographic Museum of the River Professions by Rivalta's Park Center, the hostel and the boatmen make it one of the places not to be missed.
