Roncoferraro

From the Huns to Matilda of Tuscany: crucial Governolo at the mouth of the river Mincio

The many Etruscan findings from the 5th and early 4th century BC show that the territory of Roncofreddo was already inhabited since that time and also during the age of the Gauls and of the Romans. The strategical river location of the village of Governolo made this territory a protagonist of the historical events occurred.

In the 17th century Bertazzolo realized the famous canal lock based on Leonardo's drawings.

It is worth visiting the Saints Erasmo and Agostino parish church from the 18th century, where you can admire the painting by Borgani (1614) "The Meeting of Leo I and Attila". Near the small harbor you can visit the Clock Tower (which was equipped with a double lift bridge to reach the opposite river bank) and crenellated house, nearby there are the ruins of the Bertazzolo supporting lock.

Governolo is a vital center of Italy's water transport network. The Conca del Bertazzolo Ecomuseum is located in the former bed of the river Mincio, where you can find the ancient waterworks realized by Gabriele Bertazzolo in the beginning of the 17th century. Near the museum there is also a new hostel.

The northern area includes the wetland of community importance of Chiavica del Moro.
