The 'Horn' of Mt. Catria

On foot         Great Interest: Bird Watching Great Interest: Geology
  • Departure: Scheggia
  • Arrival: Corno del Catria
  • Duration: 4 hour/s
  • Difficulty Level: EEA - For expert hikers with equipment
  • Length: 5.2 km

This is a very interesting trail, thanks to the possibility of eagle-watching and to the presence of remarkable geological outcrops; yet, it requires a good knowledge of the mountain environment, appropriate gear and suitable weather conditions. Near Scheggia, on the "Flaminia" National Road SS3, take SS360. We highly recommend visiting the palaeontological site of Valdorbia, one of the richest fossil fields of the Apennines, as well as one of the most sought-after Jurassic destinations for the 19th century scholars from all over the world. 300 m after the Valdorbia crossing and shortly before a small bridge, you will find a signpost indicating trail n°29. A mule track will lead you to the bottom of the rocky ridge; turn left; a steep path will lead you up to 927 m a.s.l.; some sections, such as the Catria Col, are very narrow and require good climbing skills. From the Col you can drive to the Boccatore Shelter with the vehicle you previously left on the spot.
