Elmo Trail

  • Trail Conditions: On foot, By bike, On horseback
  • Interest: Flora
  • Departure: S. Faustino
  • Duration: 7 hour/s 30 minutes
  • Difficulty Level: E - Hiking (level)
  • Length: 17.6 km

This trail encircles the Elmo woods, a hilly area of 1000 hectares covered with a luxuriant vegetation (mainly holm-oaks). The length of this trail does not allow for a single-day walk, but you can easily ride on it, either on horseback, or on a mountain bike. A special carefulness is requested only in the sections inside the woods, in order not to lose one's bearings. Start from Villa Valentini, near S. Faustino, then take the asphalted road towards S. Marino, until you get at the ruins of the Fruga mill. Then take the wide unsurfaced road going uphill, on the left. Cross Fosso Montarsone, go past Case Cittino, Case Casalicchio and Settano. Then keep left for another 400 m approximately: a hairpin bend on the left will lead you to the crest of Mount Melonta, one of the most scenic spots of the STINA area. Go back along the ridge, down to the area known as "Forcone" (Three-tined Fork); then leave the main road and go towards Podere Melonta. Walk on downhill; after some hairpin bends, take the unsurfaced road on the left towards Fosso di Melonta and cross the fosso. For the next two km, approximately, this section of the path overlaps the Two-Lakes Crossing Trail (TDL); then turn left, on the uphill pathway towards Case Pratelle and Casa Nova. The trail then runs along the woods and takes you back to Villa Valentini in a short time.
