Mt. Subasio is the mountain of Assisi and is an isolated mountain with respect to Valle Umbra. The current shape of Mt. Subasio is the result of the interaction between endogenic and exogenous phenomena and consists of carbonate sedimentary rocks of marine origin. The endogenic phenomena have deformed the strata which formed with the deposit of the sediments on an ancient seabed between the Mesozoic Era (210 million years ago) and the Upper Miocene (about 10 million years ago). The exogenous phenomena have shaped the surface of the mountain creating the current morphology which some people wrongly take for the morphology of a volcano.
Several fossils have been found on Mt. Subasio: they have been displayed by G.U.M.P (Gruppo Umbro Mineralogico Paleontologico), in the Geopalaeontology Ecological Lab situated in the offices of Monte Subasio Park.
The lab houses a permanent exhibit dedicated to geology and palaeontology developing in 3 rooms: the first room deals with the fossil formation processes and the geological eras through the display of fossils coming from all over the world; the second room deals with Mt. Subasio through local rocks and fossils; the third room, which has been recently inaugurated, deals with different and fascinating themes. On display some fossil reptiles of the Mesozoic Era coming from different and important fossiliferous deposits at an international level, and a comparison work between the Jurassic period in Umbria and in the rest of Europe. Moreover, this room also deals with the extinction of the ammonites and dinosaurs. There is also an educational room where visitors can interact with fossils with the help of microscopes and they can create moulds.

- For groups and school groups, G.U.M.P. organizes guided visits, on demand.
