It is clung to Mt. Pilone, where in the 11th century a Benedictine fortress and the surrounding town stood. Today, the ancient Rocca or Corte is only a ruin, but the historical town center has maintained its medieval aspect, with crooked and steep lanes and small houses which seem to be anchored into the rock. Important monuments are the 15th century Collegiata di Maria Santissima della Visitazione with its Renaissance portal and interesting paintings and Santa Maria Portella Church at the gates of the town. However, the peculiar feature distinguishing it from other towns is the brotherhood it has established since the 19th century with artists coming from all over the world: as a matter of fact, in the early 19th century, it became part of the foreign artists' itinerary and in 1810 the painter Antonio Koch from Tyrol was inspired for an engraving followed by those by Bartolomeo Pinelli and many more Italian and foreign artists, until when, in the 1970s, they began to leave indelible traces of their passage, like frescoes and wall paintings which still today color the town walls. In the early 1980s, Maestro Antonello Bianchi from the School of Fine Arts in Florence created with its students the "Staircase of the Artists" connecting two squares, downstream and upstream Cervara, so that today it is possible to admire several sculptures representing various subjects which seem to be coming out from the bare rock.
