Vallepietra is the richest site in springs and water. Along the initial stretch of the river, near the town, there are many points where subterranean waters surface: they are only a part of the natural heritage of the Park and Lazio, a very rich region in subterranean waters and springs. In particular, this area is characterized by carbonate and dolomitic rocks forming the bone structure of the mountain chain: they represent an important "refilling area" for the regional water bearing layers, supplying also important peripheral springs and perennial watercourses. It is next to this very permeable structure, where the penetration of the meteoric waters in the underground is high, that the subterranean water bearing layer becomes very deep. If, on the one hand, this feature preserves it from intensive exploitation (since it is not very accessible), on the other hand it makes it more vulnerable, since its hypothetical pollution would seriously and irreparably endanger the several and important peripheral springs.
