In ancient Lunigiana
The ancient village of Licciana subsumes all the features of the villages - and, ultimately, of the territories - of the National Park: origins that are lost in the mists of time; a castle that was turned into a palace; a labyrinth of narrow and sometimes arcaded alleys, branching off what was known as the salt road; severe-looking stone buildings; shops that are ancient and modern at the same time. Like many other places in the Park, an important part of Italian history took place here: the Risorgimento gave Licciana its second name - Nardi - in memory of Anacarsi Nardi, who was born in Apella di Licciana (where the Park's Visitor Centre is located) and fell at Vallone di Rovito together with the Bandiera brothers. A small exhibition inside the castle, right above the arches, tells the history of the Park's ancient roads and villages.
