Wines

Wine growing has always been the most important traditional activity of Elba Island, although today is less practiced than in the past, but more careful to enhance the quality of the products. The most representative wine of Elba is Aleatico, a passito wine of ancient tradition made from sun-dried grapes and selected to give origin to a wine with an intense ruby color and an unmistakable fruity aroma. Another wine which is well-known and appreciated from centuries is Moscato, that together with Ansonica passito belongs to the desert wine category. Among the DOC table wines there are White Elba, Red Elba, Rosy Elba, and Ansonica. Along "Strada del Vino Costa degli Etruschi", you can go along an itinerary including the whole territory of Elba Island, indicated by specific panels thanks to the initiative of the Province of Livorno, involving the wine growing holdings of the municipal territories of Portoferraio, Rio nell'Elba, Rio Marina, Porto Azzurro, Capoliveri, Campo nell'Elba, Marciana, and Marciana Marina. In Giglio Island it is still possible to visit the one and only local cellar producing Ansonica Costa d'Argento DOC.
