The guidebook describes all the 95 Protected Areas of Tuscany, established until 2004, included in the Protected Area Official List:

• 3 Regional Parks
• 3 Provincial Parks
• 41 Provincial Nature Reserves
• 48 Protected Areas of Local Interest (ANPIL).

Moreover, the guidebook describes the state-owned PAs in Tuscany: 3 National Parks, 34 State-owned Nature Reserves. To all these areas, the wildlife center of Bolgheri (LI) has been added for its naturalistic value.
The Protected Areas are gathered in 81 groups according to the environments they have in common and their proximity; moreover, they are divided according to 3 big geographical areas: the coast and the islands, the inland hills, Alpi Apuane and the Apennines.
