Bergamot

It is a particular citrus fruit because it has never been planted or duplicated elsewhere. Similar to an orange, but with a color going from green to yellow according to the ripening level, it has a very thin and smooth peel and a weight going from 80 to 200 grams. Three varieties are cultivated: "Femminello", with thin branches and smooth fruits, "Castagnaro", stronger and with less spherical and a bit wrinkled fruits, and "Fantastico" (about the 75% of the production regards this variety). Each fruit contains from 10 to 15 slices. With an acidulous taste and intense perfume, the bergamot is cultivated in the areas of Roccella Jonica and Gioiosa Jonica, as well as in the surroundings of Brancaleone, Bruzzano Zeffirio, Capo Spartivento (Bova and Melito Porto Salvo), and mainly in the localities of the Lower Jonian area and Reggino.
