GIREPAM is a strategic project started in January 2017, with a three-year duration and a 5.6 million budget, 85% of which is covered by the European Regional Development Fund

(Genova, 29 Nov 17) GIREPAM project background: sea and coasts are places where fauna moves and species mix their genetic makeup, but the negative effects of human activity spread, too: overexploitation of resources, social conflicts, frequent presence, pollution, etc. The project aims at addressing and solving problems shared by marine-coastal habitats and species of the Mediterranean basin.

Transboundary approach: problems may recur if solutions are not shared, thus frustrating individual actions undertaken by the various actors involved in management and development of the marine-coastal space.

The common challenge is to create a common strategy of transboundary integrated management, to be planned and implemented by Regions together with Parks and Protected Areas, identifying common solutions to the main management issues of the area of cooperation: overexploitation of resources, social conflicts, frequent presence, pollution, etc. The purpose is therefore to improve governance and management of marine and coastal areas, carried out by actors in charge of the preservation of the natural heritage, in the framework of a global approach going beyond a limited, territorial vision and considering the European perspective for the development of a green-blue economy.
