On 8th December the lights of solidarity of the Illuminated Christmas Crib of Manarola will be turned on
In the charming setting of Tre Croci hill, above Manarola, in the evening of Friday 8th December, the thousands lights illuminating the Christmas Crib built among the vineyards will be turned on, according to a thirty-year tradition.
The Christmas Crib, planned and built during the years by Mario Andreoli, a retired railwayman, consists of about 300 characters made with recycled material scattered throughout 4,000 square meters among the vineyards, and is lit by 15,000 light bulbs connected with 8 kilometers of cables. At the top of the hill, the comet will illuminate the hut.
The lighting ceremony of the Christmas Crib is dedicated to UNICEF: the Firemen of La Spezia, as testimonials of the United Nations organization for children, will welcome with water games in the sea the group of over six hundred persons - disabled persons and the staff of the Association SempliceMente - who will get to Riomaggiore at about 3.00 p.m. with a special train coming from Genoa and will walk along the charming Way of Love to Manarola, to get then to the square of the Church of San Lorenzo, waiting for the lighting ceremony of the Illuminated Christmas Crib.
Before the lighting, the Firemen will moor at Manarola harbor and will give to the Mayor of Riomaggiore, Lino Gogioso, a Pigotta puppet made in the Cinque Terre National Park workshop. The Mayor will then give the puppet to the national president of UNICEF, Antonio Sclavi.
Pigotte puppets will be sold to support the vaccination of children living in the Developing Countries. The proceeds obtained from the sale of each Pigotta puppet will give the opportunity to vaccinate eight children.
On the occasion of the Christmas Crib lighting, CAI has organized a walk which, leaving in the morning from Foce, above La Spezia, will go along various trails up to Cinque Terre ridge, to get then to Manarola. At the sunset, a torchlight procession organized by CAI will leave from the church square to get to the hill of the Christmas Crib, where the lights will be turned on.
Banda Filarmonica from Sestri Levante and the Polyphonic Choir from S.Ambrogio di Uscio will participate in the event.
After the ceremony, tasting of pancakes cooked by the women from Lago di Sori, with the contribution of the Local Tourist Board of Uscio.
The Christmas Crib of Manarola will be illuminated until 2nd February.

Naturopathy conquers Cinque Terre
Living in a national park can mean having to bear restrictions and lack of comfort, but it can also be the occasion to try and live better.
Living better does not only mean having new job opportunities and safeguarding the environment, but it can also mean fighting against stress, finding natural remedies against illness, and preventing illness. It is a choice of life which should/could be made by many local authorities and in 5 Terre National Park, President Franco Bonanini has decided to make it real after listening to Gerd Kleinpoppen. But let's explain: since December, hundreds of people living in 5 Terre have been to Gerd Kleinpoppen, the German naturopath and iridologist who is helping adults and children to live better. Nothing strange with it, since for many years the promoters of the "complementary" medicine are helping men and women to have a better relationship with their body.
