In the years 2004-2007, the third edition of "Atlante degli uccelli nidificanti nelle province di Forlì-Cesena e Ravenna" was prepared, after the "historical" editions of the 1980s (Foschi e Gellini 1987; Provincia di Ravenna 1987) and the mid-90s (Gellini e Ceccarelli 2000). The first atlas had a purely qualitative approach and was based on a wide-mesh geographical grid. The second atlas represented an important improvement, both for the geographical definition of the distribution of the species and for the quality of the census methods: for the first time, a quality approach was adopted, enabling the assessment of the differences in abundance of the species in the meshes of the geographical grid used.
