Area "The Way of the Salt"Via Salaria winds in the valley of Tronto. Laid out in the 1st century BC by the engineers of the ancient Rome to transport the salt and the other goods unloaded in the Adriatic harbors to the Urbe, the road is a thread linking the towns and the valleys of the Laga slope in the Marches.

Area "Major Road"One of the most ancient roads of the Apennines goes along the winding valley separating Gran Sasso from Laga. Dug during the millennia by the waters of Vomano, the valley goes from Capannelle Pass to the hills of Montorio, and has been for two thousand years one of the most important roads of the Apennines.

Area "Sicilian Valley"Other Italian hills are more famous than these, but a few are more spectacular. Rich in villages, farmsteads, and churches like the most famous countryside of Tuscany and Umbria, the Sicilian Valley lies near Teramo and the sea, and is easily accessible, thanks to Gran Sasso Tunnel, from L'Aquila and Rome.

Area "The Barony Lands""Campo Imperatore could be Tibet: it recalls the boundless plain of Phari Dzong, at 4,200 meters, along the way between India and Lhasa". The words by Fosco Maraini, orientalist and mountain climber from Florence who visited for the first time Gran Sasso at the end of the 30s, are the best introduction to the vastness of Campo Imperatore, the largest plateau in the Apennines, stretching at the foot of the easternmost summits of Gran Sasso.

Area "Tirino Valley"The waters of the southern slope of Gran Sasso come back to light in two of the most beautiful and abundant springs of Abruzzi. The river Tirino, one of the clearest and most charming rivers of the Apennines, springs from the spectacular resurgences of Capo d'Acqua and Presciano, and heads for south-east, lined with large canebrakes and rare trees like the Large Grey Willow.
