Among the several trails going through the valleys and the mountains of Parco della Majella, we have chosen eight of them which are particular interesting from a naturalistic, panoramic, or historical point of view; a wide range of proposals to give the possibility to know the most authentic soul of these mountains also to those who do not have time or do not want to carry out a demanding trekking.
1 - From Serramonacesca to San Liberatore to Majella to Castelmenardo and to the hermitage of Sant'Onofrio
Not very famous but very charming itinerary which follows for long stretches quiet non-asphalt roads, in the northernmost corner of the protected area.
- Difference in height: 550 meters up and down
- Walking time: 3.45 hours
2 - From Roccamorice to San Bartolomeo in legio and to Santo Spirito in Majella
This itinerary gives the opportunity to visit two of the most charming hermitages of Majella at the same time. Almost three kilometers long, the calcareous part overhanging the road is crossed by several climbing ways and houses Peregrine and Kestrel's nests.
- Difference in height: 430 meters up and down
- Walking time: 3.45 hours
3 - The ring-route of the Orfento
A ring route in the lower part of the valley of the Orfento, a State Nature Reserve since 1970 (the upper part is subject to an integral safeguard). In the area it is easy to sight the Eagle and the Deer. To carry out this itinerary, it is necessary to previously inform the Visitor Center in Caramanico.
- Difference in height: 650 meters up and down
- Walking time: 4 hours
4 - From the Colle delle Vacche to the hermitage of San Pietro and to Mt. Morrone
Long, panoramic, and pleasant, this itinerary is the best way to climb to the summit of Morrone along the slope of Sulmona. The departure point is the mountain hut Colle delle Vacche (meters 1,105), in a wonderful panoramic position and surrounded by a beautiful conifer wood which you can reach in 10 kilometers from Bagnaturo with a comfortable non-asphalt road. Currently in bad conditions, the mountain hut will be soon reconstructed and available for hikers.
- Difference in height: 950 meters up and down
- Walking time: 4.45 hours
5 - From the Majelletta to the Anfiteatro delle Murelle and to Mt. Focalone
Classical, very busy, and not very long, this itinerary is the best known of Majella. It offers wonderful views over the valleys of Orfento, Selvaromana, and of the Tre Grotte and the emotion of the meeting with the chamois of Altopiano delle Murelle. Currently, from the crossing and from the hotels of the Majelletta, which can be reached from Lanciano Pass, you can go ahead by car towards the mountain hut Pomilio, the summit of the Majelletta, and to the parking area before the Blockhaus. According to the Park's plans, this road will be eliminated. Therefore, in the future it will be necessary to start the route on foot from the hotels of the Majelletta (meters 1,664), through the pastures of the north-western slope, with a total difference in height of 1,100 meters and a length of 6 hours.
- Difference in height: 700 meters up and down
- Walking time: 4 hours
6 - The ring-route of Val Serviera of the valley of Santo Spirito
By going through wild environments, this itinerary, even if long and demanding, is the best one to know the deep valleys of the eastern slope of Majella.
- Difference in height: 1.220 meters up and down
- Walking time: 6.30 hours
7 - From Fonte Romana to Mt. Amaro
Dedicated to trained hikers, this itinerary represents the "normal way" to reach the summit of Majella from the slope of Sulmona. The departure point, marked by a Cai sign, can be reached in 7 kilometers from Campo di Giove and in a little more than one kilometer from the SS road 487 linking Pacentro to San Leonardo pass and to Caramanico Terme.
- Difference in height: 1.560 meters up and down
- Walking time: 7.30 - 8.30 hours
8 - From Quarto del Barone to Fonte Cernaia and to Mt. Secine
Solitary and not very visited from hikers, the massif of Mt. Secine and Pietra Cernaia marks the south-eastern end of Parco della Majella and offers pleasant hikes in an area where without a doubt the bear lives. It is one of the most charming itineraries of the area, and it can present some problems in spring, when the Quarto del Barone becomes a swamp because of the thaw.
- Difference in height: 650 meters up and down
- Walking time: 3.30 hours
