The phenomenon of encastellation on the western slopes of Morrone has produced fascinating examples of fortresses built on strategic high ground. The Castello Cantelmo of Popoli is placed on the Gole (gorges) di Popoli, the northern entrance of the Peligna Valley. This, together with the castles of Vittorito, Roccacasale, Pratola, Prezza, Pacentro, Bugnara, Pettorano, Introdacqua, Anversa and Villalago constituted a complex network of castles.
