1990, the year in which the water crisis of Pilato Lake almost led to the extinction of
Chirocephalus marchesonii,
an endemic species populating this fragile biotope, has been the
occasion to start a project that has become one of the most important
projects of Monti Sibillini National Park. With the aim to safeguard
the precious natural resources of the area, the project has promoted
the reorganization of tourist activities, the creation of adequate
services (picnic areas and campsites), as well as the environmental
recovery of the road crossing the wonderful Piano della Gardosa, at the
end of which the trail leading to Pilato Lake begins: the lake is a
real natural jewel situated at the foot of Mt. Vettore (2,476m), the
highest summit of Monti Sibillini.
