The Centennial Glaciological Trail

On foot
  • Departure: Rifugio dei Forni (2,176m)
  • Duration: 6 hour/s
  • Length: 8 km

Created in 1995 to celebrate the centennial of the establishment of "Comitato Glaciologico Italiano" (the Italian Glaciological Committee), the trail winds across Valle dei Forni, in Valfurva, at the discovery of the homonymous glacier and its history. The itinerary (about 8 km) is not particularly difficult: in ordinary conditions it is accessible to everybody and it requires a 6-hour walk. From Forni Mountain Hut (2,176m asl), the trail leads towards Branca Mountain Hut, ascending the valley on the right bank side. Leaving behind the stretch spanning the large lateral moraine, you reach the lower part of the glacier and cross it on the left side of the valley. Then the trail leads you back to Forni Mountain Hut, completing the ring-route. The itinerary has ten rest stops from which it is possible to observe the most important traces of the present and past life in Forni Glacier. Small (almost invisible and environmentally-friendly) descriptive panels explain how the activity of the glaciers has shaped the surrounding territory.
