Bormio Civic Museum

Local history, art, traditions, and culture

It is situated in the 18th century wing of Palazzo De Simoni, a real castle currently housing the Town Hall offices.
The local history, art, traditions, and culture find an ideal synthesis in the Museum demanded by the local people in order to hand down to future generations the beautiful and brilliant ideas of their ancestors.
The Museum was born in 1961 and consists today of 14 halls housing a very rich collection divided into two main sections: the historical-artistic section and the ethnographic section. In the first section, among many precious objects, it is possible to admire two ancons coming from local churches, the mould of the Etruscan bas-relief found during the demolition of a building in Via Roma, and a series of ex-voto deriving from the simple faith of the local people: who lived through the war, an avalanche, or a fire, or a sick person healing from a serious illness.
The ethnographic section gives a lively and fascinating overview of how people used to live and work in the area of Bormio in the past. Gathered in order to reconstruct characteristic places, we can find the tools of the farmer or the cheese maker, the looms used to weave fabrics and carpets or to make shoes.
We would also like to mention an interesting collection of carts and sledges and a hall dedicated to the wars upsetting the area.
