The Wild Boar Census Program will Start Soon in Porto Conte Protected Area

Wild boar The operative program regarding the wild boar census that will be held in spring in Porto Conte Park has been defined.
The project was born thanks to an agreement between Azienda Speciale Parco di Porto Conte, the Zoology and Evolutionary Genetics Faculty of the University of Sassari, the Sardinia Forest Authority, and the Province of Sassari.
Given the great problems deriving from the inconsiderate increase in wildlife and in particular in wild boars, the Park Authority has got in touch with experts from the University of Sassari in order to face the problem and find adequate solutions supported by scientific rigor.
The collaboration with the University of Sassari materialized thanks to the issue of a scholarship by the Park Authority: this scholarship will give the opportunity to the team led by prof. Marco Apollonio, director of the Zoology Faculty of the University of Sassari, to carry out adequate research activities and the wild boar census.
The program will also involve the staff of the Sardinia Forest Authority.
The program includes a training session of the staff involved in the project, the choice of a site where to place food, and the supply and monitoring modalities.
The real census will begin in May. Subsequently, the data will be elaborated and a final report will be prepared. Given the serious damages caused by the wildlife to the lands within or at the borders of the protected area and the risk of traffic accidents (see related article), the study of wildlife management solutions represents an important response and commitment by the Park Authority towards the subjects affected by the problem: farmers or drivers living within the protected area.
