Labter

At the moment, the main operative structure of the Park is LABTER ("Laboratorio Territoriale di Educazione Ambientale", a local environmental education center) in Scauri, obtained from the recovery and restoration of the refectory belonging to the abandoned brick factory called "Sieci".
Although it does not have fixed opening hours, Labter houses activities according to a calendar which is periodically updated.
It has a well-equipped conference hall, a multimedia hall, and a library.

The Community Garden

Moreover, the project "Community Garden" has been started. The project aims at:

  • creating a Mediterranean garden of autochthonous plants;
  • recovering a degraded environment in front of Labter in Scauri, involving the local community;
  • sensitizing to the care for green spaces and favoring the role of parks as promoters of the recovery and re-use of the environment, recovering the value of the relation between man and the naturalistic heritage of the territory;
  • thoroughly investigating the knowledge of the flora of Gianola e Monte di Scauri protected area;
  • developing the sense of belonging, love, and respect for the environment;
  • promoting the socialization between the young and the old and the exchange of the heritage of experience from one generation to the other.

After a sensitization campaign and various meetings with the potential users, the first group has been created. This group consists of eight adults belonging to the Therapeutic Community "Maricae". The group has developed a project regarding a flower bed with Mediterranean essences that will be created next spring.

The main issues dealt with are the Mediterranean maquis in the preparation of local gardens and cultivation techniques and the use of rainwater for irrigation.

Further Park Activities

In the Park there is a group formed by the surveillance staff who is not only responsible for the surveillance activities both on the land and at sea, but also for the fire emergencies. Moreover, the Park Keepers support scientific activities (with census and surveys), environmental education and promotional activities, the wildlife recovery, in collaboration with the National Forest Service and local veterinary surgeons. They are also at the visitors' disposal for guided visits (for information and bookings, please contact the Park Head Offices in Gaeta).
