From Seriate to Ghisalba

Itinerary no. 1

  • Trail Conditions: On foot
  • Interest: Wildlife, Hystory
  • Departure: Seriate
  • Arrival: Ghisalba

As far as the environmental aspect is concerned, it is an area where the human action has deeply shaped the landscape with the building of several infrastructures.
The trail is characterized by the presence of big pebbles transported by the river up to its mouth in Seriana valley. Moreover, the area is characterized by meagre plain grasslands vegetating on the thin layer of soil which formed over the gravel; around them, rare bushes and some trees.
In the area of Seriate you can observe a particular sedimentary rock, the so-called "ceppo lombardo", a very hard conglomerate dating back to the Quaternary.
In Grassobbio you can visit the Belli palace dating back to the 17th century and the 16th century small church dedicated to the Assumption.
As far as the fauna is concerned, you can observe some colonies of wild rabbits, while among the birds the Sardinian Warbler, the Barred Warbler, the Crested Lark, and the Nightjar are worth a mention. The town of Urgnano is interesting since it has a medieval structure with a 12th century Fortress, the "Rocca". A possible itinerary on foot leaves from the kennel of Seriate at Oasi Verde II: from here you can head towards the south by following the cycling-pedestrian trail running along the river Serio and continuing in the Municipality of Grassobbio.
Another possible itinerary on foot is headed towards the river; you will return from the castle of Malpaga, visit it, and subsequently reach the castle of Cavernago Martinengo Colleoni situated not far from the former.
