At the dawn of 21st June 217 BC, the army of Hannibal Barca, positioned along the lake shores at the foot of the hills of Tuoro S/T and concealed by the morning fog, defeated the Roman legions led by the Consul Gaius Flaminius Nepos. During the battle 16,000 soldiers died. According to the popular tradition, two locations recall this massacre in their place names: Sanguineto and Ossaia. In the area, pits with a truncated-cone shape have been found: according to the researchers, they are "ustrina", that is pits used for the dead body incineration. A Roman column indicates the place where the battle took probably place. Hannibal Documentation Center in Tuoro S/T, linked to the archaeological route of the battle, reconstructs the event both through the documents contained in the library of the center - where also translated versions of some german and english scientific articles about the Trasimeno battle published by Nissen, Reuss, Sadée, Fuchs are present - and relief models of the battle based on the studies carried out by Nissen and Susini.
