Bosco Caproni historical nature trail

  • Trail Conditions: On foot
  • Interest: Flora, Hystory

The trail of Caproni forest begins near the San Martino Church in the village of the same name, and it allows to know this interesting part of the territory which was named after the family of Gianni Caproni, the "pioneer of the air", who bought these lands and reclaimed them. After a light and pleasant climb, and besides the Policromuro cliff, the ancient mule track begins and soon leads to the oolite quarry.
Climbing again one reaches the holm oak forest, where there are dry-stone walls called "fratte".
Before reaching the Platone bump it is possible to see the "high quarries", whose stone was used to realize the tubes of the aqueducts. A little above one can choose to go on and to go back to the departure point, or to make a small detour going into the trenches path.
This path has been very well restored, and it develops along an extensive entrenched system placed here by the Austrians and funcioning as a defensive second line and control line on the way to Trento. Once back to the nature historical trail one can observe interesting rock formations of glacial origins, before entering a small gorge deeply engraved in the rock, and cover the ancient road used in the past to move along the slopes during the flooding period of the Sarca river.
Along the itinerary the flowers bloom and adapt to the different light and soil conditions, enriching the environment with their colors and their scents, such as the erica, the butcher's-broom, the primula and the violet.
