The Mountain Hut
Livio Bianco Mountain Hut is situated at 1,910m of altitude in the upper Vallone della Meris, on the eastern shore of Lake Sottano della Sella, at the foot of the northern slope of Mt. Matto: Livio Bianco Mountain Hut replaces the older Monte Matto bivouac, destroyed by a fire at the end of World War II. The surrounding mountains can meet the needs of expert mountain climbers, hikers, and the occasional visitors who will be enchanted by the wonderful panorama. These places are now part of
Alpi Marittime Park.
The Structure
Owned by the C.A.I. section of Cuneo, the Mountain Hut is a strong stone-built structure with plate roof. With its simple and essential architectural lines, the building well integrates with the surrounding environment. It offers about 50 beds in rooms and dormitory. It has indoor and outdoor toilets, showers with hot water, heating system, and telephone service. When the Mountain Hut is closed, there are winter premises welcoming 13 persons with blankets and mattresses. According to the regulations in force, the winter premises are not equipped either with heating system or gas, running water a few meters from the mountain hut.
Tours and Traverses
Livio Bianco Mountain Hut represents the ideal departure point if you love ski touring, mountaineering, and hikes. There are itineraries for all tastes and level of experience.
History
A group of mountain climbers and Partisans belonging to ''Giustizia e Libertà'' (Justice and Freedom) decided to build a mountain hut to honor the memory of Dante Livio Bianco, a mountain climber from Cuneo, appreciated jurist and corageous Partisan commander. After the approval of a plan of initiatives aiming at financing the project, a location had to be chosen. After discarding the hypotheses to build the mountain hut at high altitudes, a place on the eastern shore of Lake Sottano della Sella was chosen, because it was situated at a lower altitude and was easily accessible.
