Protected area

Extraordinary territory between dry land and sea, the lagoon of Marano represents, like the lagoon of Grado, the northernmost lagoon area of the Adriatic territory. One of the most typical environments in the whole regional lagoon area, which has a remarkable nature value, is the Foci dello Stella regional nature reserve. This protected area has a surface covering 1,377 hectares which includes the Stella river delta and some typical lagoon areas characterized by considerable changes in the salinity level and temperature, with presence of canals and the so-called "velme" (part of the lagoon bottom which is not deep and usually submerged, visible with the low tide) and "barene" (part of the lagoon bottom which is submerged only with the high tide).

Birds

One of the reasons why the lagoon, and especially the Foci dello Stella, has such a high nature value, is the extraordinary presence of bird species. Many different bird species inhabit this swamp environment in the different seasons. Many of them stop here during migration, others spend here winter time and many find here their ideal habitat for nesting. The Foci dello Stella's international significance and value have been officially acknowledged in 1979 with the ministerial decree which proclaimed the area a "wetland of international value" as habitat for water birds according to the Ramsar convention.
