Abstract
The efficiency of the ecological network is deeply influenced by the distribution of the roads in the territory. As a matter of fact, the road infrastructural network is one of the main elements influencing and aggravating phenomena like environmental fragmentation and habitat reduction. For this reason, within the planning of the ecological networks, the Road Ecology is gradually gaining ground: it is a discipline studying the interactions between the human ways of communication and biodiversity.
The Road Ecology studies the impacts caused by the road system on the natural environment, developing appropriate solutions able to mitigate such effects, with particular reference to road accidents, fragmentation of the natural environment, and wildlife mortality. Mitigation measures can be applied to roads, highways, and railway lines both during the planning stage and on already existing works. Road Ecology finds a valid application also in the analyses supporting the procedures of Environmental Impact Evaluation, Strategic Environmental Evaluation, and Incidence Evaluation.
The Volume collects the Proceedings of the First Conference of the Study Center for the Ecological Networks "Road Ecology: nuovi strumenti nella pianificazione infrastrutturale" that was held in Pettorano sul Gizio on 4th October 2008. The aim of the Conference was to collect the most significant Italian Road Ecology experiences, focusing the attention on the applied analytical methods, mitigation measures, GIS techniques supporting the studies, monitoring activities on the impacts on biodiversity (direct mortality, habitat loss, environmental fragmentation, wildlife monitoring activities, etc.).
