  • Interest: Religion, Archeology, Hystory
  • Duration: 35 minutes
  • Difficulty Level: suitable for every kind of training

The Way of the Cross devotional route gives pilgrims the opportunity to visit the summit of the Sacred Mountain and observe the group of 13 chapels housing the frescoes and groups of statues representing the most important moments of Jesus death sentence, the Way of the Cross, the Crucifixion, the Death, and the Deposition.
The itinerary leaves from the Romanesque-style Sanctuary, that is from the end of the Pedestrian Road of the Shrines (CAI 422 trail) and develops towards south-west along the mountain ridge, crossing a natural wood of oaks and chestnut trees, interrupted here and there by outcrops of Belmonte pink granite.
The chapels date back to the early 18th century, from 1712 to 1825. They are characterized by several building typologies: interiors with an elliptic plan, a rectangular plan, and a circular plan preceded by a pronaos where you can observe the sacred scene. The main body houses a group of statues representing a moment of the Passion, while the opposite side, the pronaos, is dedicated to the believers.
In the middle of the Way of the Cross devotional route there is a recreational area called "Campass", equipped with tables, fountain, and litter bins. Along the way, you will find further areas where you can stop.
The whole area represents an important archaeological site where it is possible to find the rests of the ancient Lombard settlements.
