Domodossola Town Center

A presentation of the most interesting places in Domodossola town center

  • Trail Conditions: On foot
    • Piazza Mercato
It is the town center and it has been always housing the Market. The architecture is of the Renaissance, with 15th century porticos supporting the 15th-16th century owners' houses. The center was occupied by the ancient Town Hall palace which was destroyed in 1805 to make the Napoleonic road of the Sempione pass. Not far from here there is the Piazza Fontana, with an octagonal fountain and an obelisk dating back to 1844.
The square has been recently repaved and the closure to the traffic has enhanced its value in a considerable manner, enabling it to house, besides the market, performances and events, transforming it into a real salon for the town.

    • Ancient Walls
Of the pentagonal circle of walls surrounding Domodossola only a few traces remain. Between via Monte Grappa and via Facchinetti there are still an angular tower and a stretch of walls.

    • S.S. Gervasio and Protasio Collegiate Church
It was built only between 1792 and 1798, planned by the Arch. Matteo Zucchi. It has one nave and two aisles and six chapels. The façade was finished only in 1953 by the Arch. Giovanni Greppi.
The Baroque small portico, national monument, and a Romanesque portal belonging to the ancient collegiate church are worth a mention. The inside frescos are by Lorenzo Peretti (1831).

    • Palazzo di Città
It was planned by the architect Leoni and it is a beautiful example of architecture of the second Neoclassicism.
The Town Hall was the seat of the Partisan Republic of the Ossola in 1944, which lasted forty days (before the Nazi repression) and was worth the Ossola the Golden Medal for Military Valour.

    • Palazzo Silva
National monument, it is situated near the Piazza Mercato and it is one of the most beautiful Renaissance noble buildings of the subalpine region. It was built in two moments from 1519 to 1640, and currently houses a Museum.
For further information, please visit the site of the Municipality of Domodossola (Italian text).

    • Madonna della Neve Church
It is situated not far from the historical town center, in via Rosmini.
Inside, a wonderful altar triptych by Francesco Tatti and a beautiful picture by Luigi Reali from Florence (1639).
