A wild, wooded upland

Sassoguidano Nature Reserve is situated in the middle Panaro Valley, and covers 280 hectares in the municipality of Pavullo nel Frignano (Modena). It consists of a wooded upland along the imposing rocky ridge of Cinghio di Malvarone (722 m asl). The Lerna stream, a tributary of the Panaro river, flows among the rocks in a wild valley, which then opens up in a typical gully landscape, with cliffs and karst morphologies. On the upland, oak woods and old chestnut woods are interspersed with green clearings where many species of orchid grow, and small, interesting wetlands can be found.
