Valle dell'Inferno e Bandella Regional Nature Reserve (photo by RR Valle dell'Inferno e Bandella)

The characterizing element is the large stretch of water (3.4 million cubic meters) of the reservoir of the ENEL dam next to Levane. From Ponte del Romito to the ENEL dam, the river Arno has eroded for some dozen meters of depth the lacustrine sediments dating back to various geological periods and in some stretches, like near Castellare, the river flows in a bed confined by the rock. The vegetal landscape consists of large woodlands (mainly Turkey oak woods) situated on the sides which are directly exposed towards the reservoir and of modest areas covered by shrubs and agricultural cultivations. Along the banks and in the several "irrigation ditches" there are arboreal riparian formations dominated by willows and poplars, and degraded riparian formations with manna ash. In Ansa di Bandella there are interesting marshy formations.
